apibrėžtis Tyrimo būdas, kuriuo siekiama paaiškinti institucijų atsiradimą ar pobūdį nagrinėjant jų istorinę raidą ir atsižvelgiant į platesnio socialinio, politinio ar panašaus konteksto įtaką. Institucijos suprantamos ne tik kaip formaliosios valdžios institucijos (pvz., vyriausybė), bet taip pat ir kaip socialinės institucijos (pvz., socialinė klasė) ar daugelio palaikomos idėjos. T. Skocpol ir P. Piersonas išskiria šiuos svarbiausius istorinio institucionalizmo bruožus: siekiama atsakyti į plačius klausimus (pvz., kaip ir kodėl atsirado gerovės valstybė); siekiama suprasti pokyčius per ilgą laikotarpį (neretai dešimtmečius ar net epochas); daug dėmesio skiriama veiksnių eiliškumui, istoriniams lūžiams, ankstesnių institucinių pasirinkimų svarbai, procesų ir institucijų sąveikai įvairiuose kontekstuose.
